My summa-rated senior thesis, 'Bringing Back the Songs We Need': The Narragansett Food Sovereignty
Initiative at the Crandall Minacommuck Farm,
explored concepts of food sovereignty through the specific
experiences of the Narragansett. Enduring colonial narratives deployed by both local and state government hinder
Narragansetts' ability to exercise sovereignty in many arenas, including their access as a community to
healthy, culturally significant foods. I put contemporary Narragansett experiences in conversation with historical
events and interactions, tracing their foodways since deep time to analyze past and present impacts of colonization
on Narragansett food sovereignty. Drawing from my experiences as a public historian and museum education intern, I
explored the ways in which the creation and presentation of different narratives directly affect living communities,
utilizing archival, oral, ethnographic, and archaeological sources to expand on existing historiography.
